Mysuru: Multiple fire incidents ravaged Chamundi Hills in Mysuru on February 21, 2025, destroying large areas of dry and scrub forest. Authorities suspect miscreants ignited the fire, which was first noticed near Bandipalya and Uttanahalli Road. Strong winds further fueled the blaze, making containment efforts difficult.
Chamundi Hills, a reserve forest with dry tropical vegetation, is highly susceptible to fires. Despite previous afforestation attempts, the rugged terrain has made greening efforts unsuccessful. Fire lines, which help prevent the spread of wildfires, proved ineffective due to strong winds.
The Forest Department deployed fire and emergency personnel, initially using four fire extinguishers, later increasing the count to six. However, steep terrain and a lack of approach roads hindered firefighting efforts.
Authorities have yet to determine the full extent of the damage, but early estimates suggest at least 30 acres of forest may have been lost. Chamundi Hills is ecologically significant, serving as a watershed for Mysuru and supporting rich biodiversity, including 140 butterfly species, 193 bird species, and various wildlife such as leopards, civets, and jackals.
Given its religious and ecological importance, the fire raises concerns over conservation efforts and future fire prevention measures.
