Ballari: The historic city of Ballari will host the 88th Akhila Bharata Kannada Sahitya Sammelana this December, marking a significant return of the prestigious literary gathering after a 67-year hiatus. This confirmation came from Nadoja Dr. Mahesh Joshi, the State President of the Kannada Sahitya Parishat, during a press briefing here on Tuesday.
Dr. Joshi underscored Ballari district's deep-rooted connection to Kannada identity. Recalling the region's historical association with the Sammelana, Dr. Joshi mentioned previous conferences held in nearby Hosapete (the 6th in 1920, 12th in 1926, 30th in 1947) and the 50th edition organized in 1958. The upcoming event represents a noteworthy return to Ballari itself after nearly seven decades.
Explaining the timing, Dr. Joshi noted Ballari's distinct characteristics –climate, mining industry, and border location – stating that December was chosen for its favourable weather. He also confirmed that discussions were held with Chief Minister Siddaramaiah, who expressed a desire for increased participation from young people this year.
Beyond local attendees, Kannadigas residing internationally will receive invitations. In a unique gesture, Dr. Joshi announced plans to specifically invite the descendants of Sir Thomas Munro, Ballari's first District Collector, recognizing his historical contribution of utilizing Kannada in administrative affairs.
