Delhi: As thousands of devotees flock to Prayagraj's Mahakumbh for a sacred dip at the Sangam, a startling report by the Central Pollution Control Board (CPCB) has raised serious concerns about water quality. The report highlights alarming levels of faecal coliform bacteria in the river, sparking controversy.
Despite these findings, Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath has assured devotees that the water is not only fit for bathing but also safe for drinking rituals (Aachman).
Pollution Concerns: What Does the CPCB Report Say?
The CPCB submitted a water quality assessment report to the National Green Tribunal (NGT) on February 3, based on samples collected between January 12 and 19. The report states that faecal coliform levels exceeded the prescribed limits at multiple locations along the Ganga and Yamuna rivers in Prayagraj.
Faecal Coliform: What Are the Safe Limits?
According to CPCB guidelines:
Total coliform levels for outdoor bathing should be below 500 MPN (Most Probable Number) per 100ml.
Faecal coliform levels should not exceed 2,500 MPN/100ml.
Faecal coliform bacteria originate from human and animal waste, contaminating water through sewage discharge or other sources of pollution. Their presence in high concentrations indicates unsafe water conditions.
CPCB Says River Water Unfit for Bathing
According to a media report, in its submission to the NGT's Principal Bench, the CPCB explicitly stated that water quality in Prayagraj failed to meet primary bathing standards due to excessive faecal coliform levels at all monitored locations. This raises health concerns for millions of pilgrims participating in the Mahakumbh.
Yogi Adityanath Defends Water Quality Amid Reports
Responding to the CPCB's findings, CM Yogi Adityanath dismissed concerns, stating that faecal coliform levels in Prayagraj are within the permissible limit of 2,500 MPN/100ml. He further reassured devotees that the water remains suitable for both ritualistic bathing and drinking (Aachman).
