In the early hours of Monday, strong tremors shook Delhi and its surrounding regions following a 4.0-magnitude earthquake that struck the nation's capital.

The National Centre of Seismology reported that the quake's epicentre was located in the Jheel Park area of Dhaula Kuan, originating merely 5 km beneath the earth’s surface. Shallow earthquakes like this one, occurring close to the surface, are known to cause more significant damage compared to deeper ones.

In response to the earthquake, Prime Minister Narendra Modi urged residents to remain calm, adhere to safety protocols, and stay vigilant for potential aftershocks. On his X account, he reassured the public, stating, "Authorities are keeping a close watch on the situation."

Delhi, falling within Zone IV of India's seismically active areas, is particularly susceptible to earthquakes. This zone is the second-highest category in terms of earthquake risk.

The Delhi Police also took to X to address the situation, expressing their concern with the message, “We hope you all are safe, Delhi!” They advised citizens to contact the emergency helpline 112 in case of any emergencies.
