In Los Angeles, bright pink powder seen blanketing streets and rooftops is Phos-Chek, a widely-used fire retardant deployed to combat wildfires. Manufactured by Perimeter Solutions, the pink dye in Phos-Chek helps pilots and firefighters mark targeted areas. The retardant, sprayed ahead of fires, coats vegetation to slow the flames by blocking oxygen, offering a durable alternative to water, especially in hard-to-reach terrains.

While effective, Phos-Chek raises environmental concerns. Chemicals in the retardant may harm wildlife, pollute waterways, and pose health risks. Legal challenges have called for stricter regulation, but its use continues under EPA oversight. Efforts to reduce toxicity and protect sensitive ecosystems are underway as wildfires intensify due to climate change.
