New Delhi: In a significant diplomatic engagement, 22 out of 27 European Union (EU) Commissioners arrived in India for high-level discussions with Prime Minister Narendra Modi. This marks the first time such a large EU delegation has visited India together, underscoring the growing strategic partnership between the two sides.

A Green Arrival for a New Era

The European leaders made an impactful statement upon arrival, traveling in a hydrogen-powered bus to Hyderabad House in New Delhi, highlighting their commitment to sustainable energy and green technology. Prime Minister Modi welcomed the delegation, including European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen, setting the stage for talks on trade, investments, technology, and geopolitical challenges.

Strengthening Political and Economic Ties

One of the key takeaways from the talks was the EU’s push to deepen political engagement with India. The backdrop of these discussions is the shifting global order, particularly the uncertainty surrounding the United States' future foreign policies. Ursula von der Leyen compared India-EU relations to a rare planetary alignment, signaling transformation and growth.

A Renewed Focus on Free Trade

India and the EU discussed the long-pending Free Trade Agreement (FTA), with both sides agreeing to accelerate negotiations and conclude a deal by the end of 2025. The EU is already India’s largest trading partner, with trade volumes reaching $137 billion, and an FTA could significantly boost economic exchanges.

Strategic Cooperation in AI, Space, and Defense

Beyond trade, India and the EU committed to expanding collaboration in artificial intelligence (AI), 6G, and semiconductor technology. Both sides reaffirmed their commitment to the India-Middle East-Europe Economic Corridor (IMEC), a major connectivity project aimed at boosting global trade.

Additionally, the discussions touched upon defense cooperation, with von der Leyen noting India’s efforts to diversify its arms imports. The EU has expressed interest in stepping in as a strategic defense partner, while Prime Minister Modi emphasized the importance of co-production of advanced weaponry.

The Road Ahead

This visit lays the groundwork for deeper engagement between India and the EU, with the annual India-EU Summit scheduled for later this year. The EU’s pivot toward India reflects its broader geopolitical strategy, as both sides seek to enhance economic ties and global cooperation in an era of shifting alliances.

As the global landscape evolves, the India-EU partnership is poised to play a critical role in shaping a new economic and strategic order.
