Hubballi, DailyMail24 Online: Doctors at Karnataka Medical College and Research Institute (KMCRI) have successfully removed a parasitic twin from the abdomen of a newborn — a rare condition known as foetus in foetu.
This anomaly occurs in only about 1 in 5,00,000 live births. It develops early in pregnancy when one foetus becomes enveloped by another within the womb. The trapped foetus is unable to grow or survive independently.
KMCRI Director Dr. Ishwar Hosamani said a woman from Pashupatihal village in Kundagol taluk had originally conceived twins, but one foetus was absorbed by the other during pregnancy.
With fewer than 200 documented cases worldwide, this instance is considered exceptionally rare. The condition was first detected during an antenatal scan by Dr. Roopali Odeyar, who promptly informed the gynaecology team. The mother was closely monitored with periodic scans until delivery, and minimal development of the parasitic foetus was noted.
The baby was delivered through a normal birth. After delivery, a postnatal scan confirmed the presence of the parasitic foetus inside the newborn. Paediatric surgeon Dr. Rajashankar S and his team performed the surgery and meticulously removed the parasitic twin.
Dr. Hosamani said the baby is in good health and recovering well. He credited the outcome to a multidisciplinary approach.
The medical team included Dr. Hemalath Meharwade (Gynaecologist), Dr. Vinod Ratageri (Paediatrician), Dr. Manjappa, Dr. Fattepur, Dr. Rajkumar Hiremath, and others.
Those present during the briefing included Medical Superintendent Dr. Ishwar Hasabi, PMSSY Medical Superintendent Dr. Rajashankar S, RMO Dr. Rajashekhar Dyaberi, Dr. Laxmikant, and KMCRI Principal Dr. Suryakanth K.
