Karwar: The Panchavati Butterfly Park, located near Joida in Uttara Kannada district, is back with its annual Fireflies Fair. Guided tours will be organized from Kumbarwada village, offering visitors a chance to witness the magical congregation of these glowing insects during the pre-monsoon months.
Experts will explain the fascinating life cycle of fireflies and the science behind their bioluminescence. Both larvae and adult fireflies can be spotted during the tours.
“With increasing light pollution near forest areas, firefly congregations are becoming increasingly rare. A few years ago, they were commonly seen on city outskirts. Today, they’re disappearing even from wooded regions. Global studies show a drastic decline in firefly populations, mainly due to excessive artificial lighting and habitat degradation,” explained a naturalist from Panchavati Park.
The team Panchavati also runs student programmes and conducts regular tours. The Park is now created two more butterfly gardens in two schools of Joida taluk.
